Pragmatic is a term that refers to people who are pragmatic and sensible. People who are pragmatic focus on what is working in the real world and aren't entangled in ideas that are not realistic.

The word pragmatic comes from the Latin praegere, meaning "to grasp hold of." Pragmatism is a philosophic tradition that holds that understanding the world and agency are interdependent. William James described pragmatism in 1907 as a new term for a variety of old ways of thinking. His lecture series, "Pragmatism - A New Name for Old Ways of Thinkin'" was a response to this. He began by defining the 'The Present Dilemma in Philosophy'--a fundamental and seemingly irresolvable clash between two different ways of thinking, the empiricist with a tough-minded belief in the experience of things and going by the facts, and the soft-hearted preference for a priori-based theories that appeal to rationalization. He proclaimed that pragmatism would bridge this gap.
He defined 'praxy an idea or truth that is rooted not in an idealized concept but in the present world. He argued that the pragmatic approach was the most natural and true approach to solving human problems. Other philosophical theories, he said, were ineffective.
Other philosophers who developed pragmatist ideas during the 1900s included George Herbert Mead and W.E.B Du Bois, who came up with pragmatic perspectives on social science and the study of race relations; Alain Locke, who created pragmatist views on the structure of science and education as well as John Dewey, who articulated pragmatist ideas in areas including public policy, education, and democracy.
